Alkali metals have been widely studied in the fields of medicine, batteries and so on. However, due to the limitations of chemical reactivity and electron/ion beam sensitivity, the inherent atomic structure of alkali metals and their basic properties are difficult to reveal.

Alkali metals have been widely studied in the fields of medicine and batteries. However, due to the limitations of chemical reactivity and electron/ion beam sensitivity, the inherent atomic structure of alkali metals and their basic properties are difficult to reveal.

Recently, the Yu Yi research group of Shanghai University of Science and Technology used advanced in-situ transmission electron microscopy technology to propose a simple and universal method for in-situ observation of the growth process of alkali metals at the atomic scale. Atomic resolution imaging of metal lithium and metal sodium, and visualization of the growth process of alkali metals on the atomic scale with millisecond time resolution. This study helps to better understand the relationship between lithium dendrites and solid electrolytes in lithium-ion batteries. The related research results were published in NATURE COMMUNICATIONS under the title "Unravelling the room-temperature atomic structure and growth kinetics of lithium metal.

Researchers Use PicoFemto®In-situ TEM-STM of electrical sample rods sets up an experimental environment for in-situ growth and mechanical testing of lithium branched crystals. The lithium particles are attached to the sample loading area of the sample rod, and the other end is contacted with the lithium particles using an STM tip, and a lithium crystal is formed by applying an electrical signal. Using the three-dimensional manipulation function of the in situ rod, the lithium dendrite can be stretched in situ until it breaks. In PicoFemto®With the help of in-situ TEM-STM of electrical sample rods, the in-situ experimental process can be observed under the condition of ensuring the resolution of the electron microscope.
