Structural defects are often unavoidable in carbon nanotubes (CNTs). These structural defects will not only destroy the integrity of the lattice structure, but also may seriously affect the mechanical properties of carbon nanotubes. But from another point of view, deliberately and accurately regulating defects in CNTs can adjust their mechanical properties according to demand. This paper describes a technique for accurately tuning defects in CNTs in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) using a scanning probe-style in-situ sample rod. This technology not only has accurate adjustment, reversible process, but also has high repeatability, which is of great significance to the research and development of resonator devices based on CNTs. The relevant research results were jointly completed by Xiamen University and NIMS Research Institute in Japan and published in Nano Lett.

The PicoFemto in-situ TEM-STM system of Zeryou Technology has stably completed the work of sample loading, sub-nano-scale manipulation, application of high-frequency alternating electric field and pulse current in this study.

The researchers welded one end of the CNT to the W-tip position of the in-situ sample rod in TEM using electron beam irradiation. The CNTs were made to resonate by applying an alternating current between the gold electrode and the W tip.

Researchers used nano-manipulation units to contact the two ends of CNT with W needles and gold electrodes respectively, and modulated the defects in CNT by pulse current and electron beam irradiation. This process can be observed in real-time in situ by TEM images.

By placing a mechanical module on the in-situ probe rod, the researchers further studied the mechanical properties of the modulated CNTs.
