On May 18, Dr. Yang Yijun of Professor Wang Xi (corresponding author) team of Beijing Jiaotong University and Associate Professor Liu Xizhong (co-author) of Tianjin University of Technology, Academician Yao Jiannian of Institute of Chemistry of Chinese Academy of Sciences, International Electron Microscope Daniel Yoshio Bando, Dmitri Golberg and others published a summary of "The Role of Geometric Sites in 2D Materials for Energy Storage" in international journals. In this paper, the effects of geometric sites (point defects, line defects, surface defects, etc.) in two-dimensional nanomaterials on their electronic structure and the corresponding storage and transport processes of lithium/sodium ions are discussed in detail. (DOI:10.1016/j.joule. 2018.04.027)

In order to clarify the role of geometric sites in lithium/sodium ion batteries, researchers applied in-situ X-ray diffraction, in-situ X-ray absorption, in-situ Raman spectroscopy, in-situ infrared spectroscopy, in-situ nuclear magnetic resonance and other research methods. However, in situ transmission electron microscopy is a research tool that can dynamically observe the operation mechanism of lithium/sodium batteries at the atomic scale. In situ transmission electron microscopy technology can not only directly observe the evolution of structure and morphology, but also observe the diffusion of lithium/sodium ions at the atomic scale in real time, and also observe the electrochemical reaction in the process of charge and discharge in real time. The in-situ study of the nitrogen/phosphorus doped graphene nanobattery built in TEM using the in-situ sample rod of the PicoFemto series of in-situ samples reported in the article, which fully supports the theoretical research of the article.

In this study, nitrogen/phosphorus doped graphene was immobilized on a gold electrode and served as the anode of the cell, metallic lithium was immobilized at a tungsten tip and served as the cathode of the cell, and an ionic liquid served as the electrolyte of the cell.

PicoFemto series sample rods not only captured high-resolution electron microscope images of nitrogen/phosphorus doped graphene in-plane structure before and after lithium insertion under in-situ transmission electron microscope, but also clearly observed the morphological changes after lithium removal of nano-batteries in situ.

This review further establishes the advantages and position of Zelo's in-situ TEM solutions in lithium and other related research.
