JACS | ZEPTOOLS In-Situ TEM and FIB Cryo-Stage Assist 3D ED-MEM in Revealing Structural Disorder in Submicron Crystals
Structural disorder plays a key role in tuning the properties of functional materials such as thermoelectrics and ionic conductors, yet its detailed characterization has long faced significant challenges. Traditional X-ray and neutron diffraction techniques rely heavily on high-quality, large-size single crystals or high-purity powders, making them difficult to apply directly to micro/nano-scale or multiphase mixed materials. The rise of three-dimensional electron diffraction (3D ED) has broken this limitation. Owing to its strong scattering power for submicron single crystals, 3D ED enables high-precision determination of the average structure of tiny crystals, opening a new vista for microstructural analysis.
Nature Communications | Atomic-scale mechanism of anisotropic ion migration in 2D Bi₂O₂Se revealed by in-situ TEM from ZEPTOOLS
In the post-Moore era, traditional silicon-based semiconductors are gradually approaching their physical scaling limits, and the search for high-speed, low-power next-generation electronic devices has become a core focus of cutting-edge research. Two-dimensional semiconductors, with their atomic-scale thickness and superior electrostatic control capabilities, have opened new avenues for nanoelectronics and neuromorphic systems. Among them, bismuth oxyselenide (Bi₂O₂Se) combines high carrier mobility with excellent environmental stability. Its crystal structure consists of alternating stacks of positively charged Bi₂O₂ layers and negatively charged Se layers. This unique layered anisotropic structure gives rise to distinctly different electronic transport and resistive switching properties in the in-plane and out-of-plane directions, showing broad application prospects in neuromorphic computing and high-density memory devices.

Matter | ZEPTOOLS Liquid Nitrogen Cryogenic Probe Station Assists Research Team in Overcoming Sub-Nanometer Electrical Testing Challenges
Atomically thin amorphous materials break free from the constraints of crystalline lattice symmetry, combining two-dimensional geometric features with structural disorder, and exhibit high defect tolerance and continuously tunable physicochemical properties. Unlike two-dimensional crystals stacked via van der Waals forces, amorphous thin films lack grain boundaries and van der Waals gaps, enabling the formation of monolithic films with atomic-level flatness and structural uniformity, which show great application prospects in next-generation integrated circuits, electron transmission, and metal diffusion barrier layers. Currently, the academic community has laid a preliminary foundation in the synthesis and performance exploration of systems such as monolayer amorphous carbon and ultrathin oxides.

JACS | ZEPTOOLS FIB Cryo-Transfer System Enables Non-Destructive Analysis of Lithium-Compatible Interfaces in Solid-State Electrolytes
All-solid-state lithium batteries have become an important direction for next-generation energy storage technologies due to their combined high safety and high energy density, and finding highly compatible inorganic solid electrolytes is key to realizing this technology. At present, the few conventional electrolytes with lithium compatibility are generally limited by thermal runaway risks, low ionic conductivity, or excessively high raw material costs, making them unable to meet multiple practical requirements. In contrast, zirconium-based oxychloride solid electrolytes, with their excellent ionic conductivity, low density, good cathode compatibility, and outstanding cost advantages, are regarded as highly promising candidate materials with commercial potential.
Nature Communications | ZEPTOOLS In-situ SEM reveals dynamic fracture mechanism of 3 GPa-grade ultra-high-strength steel
Steel, as the cornerstone of modern civilization and industry, plays a critical role in the performance evolution of extreme load-bearing components, with yield strength becoming a core design parameter for service safety. After nearly a century of development, the yield strength of ultra-high-strength aerospace alloys has reached approximately 2 GPa. However, the development of next-generation frontier technologies such as drive shafts for deep-space exploration vehicles urgently demands a major leap to achieve an ultra-high yield strength of 3 GPa. This requires materials to attain ultra-high strength without compromising key damage tolerance indicators such as total elongation, reduction of area, and fatigue resistance.
